Diamond & Quantum Weekly | Oct 12–18, 2026
A new Cu–C machine-learning potential offers a simulation tool for diamond/copper interfaces. Chinese manufacturing projects advanced at different stages, Wiwynn showed an exploratory diamond microchannel concept, and Optica's GaP-on-diamond/SiV coverage revisited a January preprint.
The reporting window runs from 00:00 Beijing time on October 12 to 23:59 on October 18, 2026.
Weekly signal
One new preprint this week is directly relevant to thermal-management interfaces: it proposes a method for studying copper–carbon systems and their mechanical response. Its value lies in the method and the boundaries of the simulation. By contrast, several notable equipment-purchase, construction and investment-signing announcements in China mainly update project status; they do not yet change the assessment of how far functional-diamond applications have progressed toward deployment.
On the quantum side, Optica covered a GaP-on-diamond/SiV integrated device this week, but the research preprint had already been public since January. This brief records the society’s coverage as a communications milestone, not as a new experimental breakthrough this week.
1. A machine-learning potential links Cu–C deposition conditions to simulated interface mechanics
Submitted on October 13, Feiyu Zhou and co-authors introduced the NEP-CuC potential in a new preprint, trained on 2,727 configurations. In simulations under the specified conditions, increasing the incident copper deposition energy from 1 to 50 eV reduced the mean peak nominal tensile stress at the interface at 500 K from 12.35 ± 0.71 to 6.65 ± 0.98 GPa. This is a simulated tensile response—not a measurement of residual stress, bond strength or thermal boundary resistance (TBR). The work can help formulate process–interface hypotheses, but engineering application still requires experimental validation. Preprint
CVD diamond and MPCVD
Projects in China advance, but output and application validation remain open
On October 15, the second procurement for an 8-inch diamond MPCVD system for Peking University was reported as awarded. A reproduced award listing identifies Shenzhen Uplight Plasma Technology as the winner, with a reported price of RMB 6.5 million and model UP954; the full official award record was not available in this review. On the same day, China News Service reported that equipment had arrived for commissioning at Inner Mongolia Zhongqixin’s diamond-material project, its R&D center was in use, and a 6-inch polycrystalline diamond sample was displayed. Ordos High-Tech Zone reported on October 13 that the Guoxin Energy diamond project had been signed the previous day, with planned investment of RMB 5.7 billion. These are three different stages: equipment award, on-site construction/commissioning, and project signing. They do not establish stable production of 8-inch electronic-grade single-crystal diamond, recurring heat-spreader deliveries from Zhongqixin, or realization of Guoxin Energy’s planned capacity. The next evidence to watch is equipment acceptance, qualified-wafer data and customer-side validation. Detailed technical requirements for the Peking University procurement were not fully available for review, so equipment frequency, power and uniformity should not be inferred.
Wiwynn shows an exploratory diamond microchannel-cooling concept
On October 12, Wiwynn introduced a package-level cooling design at the OCP Global Summit that directly bonds diamond composite material to silicon and integrates microchannels, with the aim of shortening the heat path from the chip. The company had discussed related research previously; this week it further described the integrated concept. Public information still lacks comparable thermal measurements and customer-validation data. Company announcement
Company disclosures show no clear commercialization-stage jump
On October 16, Guoji Precision Engineering reported company-stated thermal-conductivity figures for single-crystal diamond, polycrystalline diamond and diamond–copper. The measurement conditions were not uniform across those figures. The company also said that its civilian thermal-management products are undergoing cooperation-based validation with leading downstream customers. Some customer-delivery language from Worldia had already appeared in August. This brief does not count either item as evidence of a newly won major customer or mass production. Quantum technology
Optica covers a GaP-on-diamond/SiV hybrid photonic device
On October 15, Optica covered a hybrid photonic platform integrating GaP nanophotonic cavities with SiV centers in diamond. The preprint reports more than 600 cavities on diamond; of 640 devices selected for transfer, 637 were successfully transferred, a 99.5% stamp-transfer yield. A selected device demonstrated SiV spin–photon coupling and single-shot spin readout at about 4 K. This is not the final functional yield across all devices, much less the end-to-end yield of a quantum network. The research preprint first appeared on January 8, 2026; the journal’s exact first-online publication date has not yet been established. Optica coverage, October 15 | arXiv:2601.04733
Conferences, exhibitions and industry events
The mid-October Guilin symposium on diamond-related materials and applications covered topics including thermal management, MPCVD and processing. The OCP Global Summit took place in San Jose from October 12 to 15. Diamond liquid-cooling exhibits there should still be distinguished as company previews, demonstrations or independently measured results. Frore announced LiquidJet Diamond on October 7, so it is not counted again as a new event this week. Wiwynn’s OCP event information
Social-media watch
Among candidate items circulating on Chinese and international social media, SAXON Q’s NV quantum-algorithm result had already been reported in September, and XeedQ’s high-school education project was announced before this week. A claim about “300 Huanghe Whirlwind 915 MHz systems” lacked a verifiable first-party announcement for this reporting window and is not treated as hard news.
What to watch next
Three evidence trails merit follow-up: whether NEP-CuC simulations are compared against measured bond strength, TBR and thermal cycling; whether projects in China publish equipment acceptance, qualified-output and customer-test data; and whether GaP-on-diamond devices progress from transfer success to stable operation with multiple emitters and entanglement.
Full-edition preview
The full edition adds the training data and applicability boundaries of the Cu–C potential, the statistical conditions behind SiV readout results, a stage-by-stage review of the domestic projects, and a record of which disclosures and papers from the week were retained or excluded.

Evidence limits and uncertainties
- NEP-CuC reports model-based atomistic tensile responses, not measured residual stress, bond strength or thermal boundary resistance; experimental comparisons remain necessary.
- The full official award record for the Peking University equipment procurement was not available for verification; an award is not delivery, acceptance or proof of stable production capability.
- Project-reported equipment commissioning, planned capacity and investment amounts are construction or project-plan milestones, not evidence of qualified output or volume delivery.
- Wiwynn disclosed an exploratory, showcased package-level diamond microchannel design; comparable thermal measurements and customer validation have not been published.
- The 99.5% GaP-on-diamond figure is a fabrication/stamp-transfer yield, not a functional-device yield; the research preprint was public in January 2026.
