FINE 2026: Diamond Is Moving from Promise to Validation
A smaller exhibition did not necessarily signal lower interest. More application-ready samples, discussion of know-how, and attention to repeatability suggested a shift toward engineering validation.
My immediate impression at FINE 2026 was that the exhibition area and exhibitor count were smaller than the previous year. Yet conference activity and technical discussion appeared stronger.
I do not read that contrast as proof that diamond has lost momentum. It looked more like a sector moving from concept promotion into capability validation.
Products are moving closer to integration
Large polycrystalline plates and wafer-scale samples were still visible, but several suppliers also showed copper-coated diamond and diamond–copper composite products. That shift matters. A large plate demonstrates growth; a coated or composite part forces the supplier to address bonding, interfaces, cycling, finishing, consistency, and a customer’s assembly.
Diamond thermal management is becoming an engineering problem rather than only a material story.
Know-how remains an industrial asset
A presentation on direct-current arc diamond growth emphasized both the value of long-term theoretical work and the need to protect the engineering know-how accumulated during industrialization.
That warning applies beyond one deposition route. CVD diamond cannot be copied simply by purchasing hardware, collecting a few parameters, or hiring one experienced person. Process windows, maintenance, materials, failure history, and tacit judgement determine whether a result survives repeated production.
Quantum activity still needs a business loop
A quantum-technology practitioner described a familiar early-market condition: companies provide samples and support academic validation while commercial returns remain uncertain. Many need another product or service to sustain the organization.
The application promise may be real, but a promising research ecosystem is not yet a stable commercial loop.
Repeatability is becoming the decisive word
A polycrystalline-diamond producer emphasized that growth and polishing consistency must exceed roughly 90% before the process becomes industrially meaningful. That threshold was a practitioner’s rule of thumb, not an audited industry standard, but the underlying point is strong.
Polycrystalline production tests plasma and thermal uniformity, substrate condition, stress, and finishing across an area and across lots. One successful run proves much less than stable repeated output.
The exhibition therefore suggested five transitions: fewer purely promotional signals, more integrated thermal products, greater respect for tacit know-how, continuing uncertainty in quantum commercialization, and stronger focus on repeatability.
The industry’s next phase will be decided by verifiable delivery capability—not by the largest sample on a stand.
